The operation of unwinding ropes is one of the most frequent actions carried out by the end-user, therefore its correct execution deserves particular attention and care.
It is recommended not to underestimate this procedure because, if performed incorrectly, it can cause injuries and even permanently compromise the technical and performance characteristics of the rope, to the point of making it unusable.
The execution of incorrect handling, in fact, in addition to representing a possible risk to the operator’s safety, can result in unnatural twists and torsions, unwanted deformations, knots, breakage and irreparable damage to the strands.
By following a few simple precautions, it is possible to unwind ropes safely1, preserving their durability, efficiency and factory features.
Below are some tips for correctly unwinding wire ropes.
UNWINDING OF THE ROPE FROM A REEL
The correct way to unwind the rope is to mount the reel on a horizontal axis supported by two stands at each end.
It is wrong to unwind the rope by keeping the reel laid on the ground on one of its two sides.
UNWINDING OF THE ROPE FROM A ROLL
To unwind the rope from a roll, a correct way is to lay the end of the rope on the ground and rotate the roll. If the coil is very heavy, it is advisable to lay it on a turntable and pull its free end.
WARNING: The aim of these tips on how to unwind the rope correctly is to avoid the formation of unwanted torsions and/or looping, which can cause even irreparable damage to the rope.
